HU-Cards have currently started to accept
updates to code in the form of USW changes. (March 29th, 2001...USW
went to "1").
ECM
Electronic Counter Measure. DirecTV using the datastream
to "seek and destroy" cards with code. ECM's usually send the access
card's processor into an infinite loop, making HU Loaders it unprogrammable.
Unlooper A device hackers use to fix access cards that have been
looped by ECMs, miseuse, or just bad luck.
USW
Update Status
Word. An outdated method of updating code on the cards...irrelevant.
Dynamic Update
Imagine a regular USW update is a package that is sent to
the card, and is then opened up (much like a .zip, or .exe file).
This means that first the update must be sent to the card, and then
it needs to be activated. Because of this, there was a significant
lag of time between updates and their use. DirecTV thus implimented
dynamic coding to the card, which enables them to run anything on
the card without first sending it down. Even though the USW on a
card might not change, dynamic code can change any bytes of data is
wishes on the fly. This dynamic coding ability killed the stealth
script, which exploited the fact that updates HU Loaders used to have to be
sent down as pieces of packages, put together, and run.
Script
(aka hack) A program designed
for a H card that will enable some or all channels to engine that drives many of the foremost
brains in this hobby and if it were not for the huge potential profits involved, DSS hacking simply wouldn't
exist. For example, Triton Industries, the Canadian-based company that gave birth to the unlooper, charged
thousands of dollars for their "WildThing" unloopers, yet unlooping services flocked to buy them because they
knew that even though the hardware was priced at several hundredfold what it actually cost to make the magic
boards, they could quickly recoup their investments and reap windfall profits to boot from the thousands of ECMed
card be viewed.
There are four types of scripts/hacks:
Activation
Sends a very similar command
to the card that DIRECTV sends when activation programming, except
activates all programs that could normally be subscribed to (hence
PPV's, etc are not opened). DirecTV combats Activation by constantly
sending down "wipe" commands, which clear extra programming
information from cards.
3m
A
type of "mini-program" that actually sits on the card, and
intercepts all “is this channel paid for” commands. When the
receiver asks this command, the 3m steps in and says, simply, “yes”.
Hence, all channels work. DIRECTV can periodically send down updates
to search for such programs, however, and destroy the card its sits
on.
Stealth: Exactly the same as 3m except for one important
detail: the script closes all known write-functionality of the card.
